Data and methodology

Every score is built from real NYC public data — no editorial picks, no paid placements.

Sitty pulls from three NYC Open Data sources:

  • Dining Out NYC (PITM-ATQC)13,121+ permitted outdoor dining venues with seating type, square footage, and permit details.
  • NYC 311 Noise Complaints50,000+ recent street noise incidents, each mapped to nearby venues by GPS coordinate.
  • DOHMH Restaurant InspectionsHealth grades and cuisine classification from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The Noise Score weights each complaint by recency, complaint type (street noise ranks higher than helicopter noise), and distance decay — closer complaints count more. Scores are normalized per borough so a quiet spot in Midtown is genuinely quiet relative to its neighborhood, not just compared to Brooklyn.
